It was yet another fundraising event of the Sri Lanka Christian Association to enhance the building fund of the Cancer Hospital in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Having successfully held a varied range of events through the past 30 years of its existence, this event was the first of its kind for this enthusiastic association, and what an enjoyable and colourful evening it was!

On Saturday the 26th of September, a Thames Tour Boat, the "Viscountess" set off at 7 o''clock and sailed gracefully along the Thames river carrying a lively and elegant group of about 160 people on board. The guests were ushered in with a warm greeting and a welcome drink from the committee, and before long, everyone had settled themselves, some on the upper deck where there would be dancing and the others on the lower deck where there would be singing.

Once the delicious starters were served, the live band, The Healers, struck up a delightful repertoire of some nostalgic singalong medleys of yesteryear which were vocalised by the lively guests 'of that era' who were provided with the printed lyrics. This was interspersed with songs in Sinhala as well, which were led by the band and once again vocally supported with enthusiasm by the guests. Everyone was then treated to a sumptuous meal provided by Golden Platter who by now have become a byword at Sri Lanka Christian Association events.

Once the meal was over, the upper deck was cleared for dancing and everyone, the movers, the shakers and the rockers both young and old, large and small, moved, hopped, jumped, wiggled, moved their torsos to Baila and did whatever else it took to the rhythm of the band and the rocking of the boat itself - or was that the drink? Well if that is your story, we will let you stick to it.

And there were those who, through all the activity and hyperactivity, found the time and the ultimate joy of just standing and watching the breath-taking moving colourfully lit scenery - of London by night, which they declared was one of the highlights of the evening.

As the finalé of the evening's programme, there was a raffle draw, without which no Sri Lankan event is complete. As the guests disembarked, their eyes were treated to a specular fireworks display, courtesy of the Savoy Hotel!

All in all, this turned out to be a successful evening, offering something different for everyone to enjoy - the music, the singalong, the company, the food, the dancing and the moving sights of the beautiful city of London by night.
