CCTV to cover entire city for Pope's visit

The police headquarters had decided to introduce a special security system by installing CCTV cameras in and around Colombo, prior to the arrival of the His Holiness, Pope Francis.
Police Media Spokesman, SSP Ajith Rohana, speaking to the media, at police headquarters yesterday morning, revealed that in addition to the already existing CCTV security system, a special security camera system at a cost of Rs 9 million is to be installed in the Dematagoda, Orugodawatte and Welikade prison areas. In addition, plans are afoot to refurbish the entire security camera system, covering Parliament roundabout, Taj Samudra hotel and Galle Face roundabout. The entire area is to be brought under surveillance via this system, and every action is to be monitored.
Moreover, the traffic congestion along Baseline Road, Peliyagoda, Orugodawatte and Kelaniya bridge are to be controlled using this system.

From the main police administration centre, instructions can be given instantly to the police officers engaged in traffic control with this camera system, the police disclosed.
The CCTV camera system was launched in 2008, spending Rs. 225 million. Following this introduction, it has been possible to identify and arrest traffic offenders via exchange of radio messages, the police media spokesman said
