At the invitation of interested devotees Ven. Dr Thawalama Dhammika Nayaka Thera, head of Geneva Buddhist Vihara in Switzerland
and Ven. Haltvigala Sujatha Thera recently initiated a series of Dhamma sermon and Meditation programs in Canada's French-speaking, states of Montreal
Ven. Dhammika Nayaka Thera said "There are no Theravada Buddhist temples in these states due to the lack of French speaking
Buddhist monks although many people in these areas have experienced the
traditions of Theravada Buddhist practises while traveling in Asian countries
such as Sri Lanka, Thailand and Myanmar as tourists. With these novel experiences they all had a great deal
of interest in learning Theravada Buddhist practices, especially Meditation. This is the reason for our programme held in June."
As a start two weeks of Dhamma sermons and Meditation sessions on Theravada practices were held.
During these sessions Karma, spiritual principle of cause and effect, the state of being happy and meditation were discussed and practiced, which
were greatly valued by all the participants.
"Questions asked through their experience of life
and karma were truly fascinating. Participating in meditation, their
sensitivity is far more heartfelt than that of us who have inherited the
Buddhist faith by birth. A relaxing attitude shown by every one, which is truly friendly, told us the urgent
need for starting a Theravada Buddhist temple in this region. I felt
that a French speaking erudite monks have a golden opportunity in
this corner of Canada to spread the true Dhamma of the Buddha."
Said Ven. Dr. Dhammika Nayaka Thera.
He also appreciated the priceless services to spread the Dhamma in Canada rendered by Ven.
