Cigarettes, liquor worth Rs.105mn seized

Eight suspects including a businessman were arrested by the Organized Crimes Division which carried out the raid after gathering information about the hidden stock.

Police seized 25,000 bottles of liquor comprising many different varieties. The house had been used as a warehouse to supply liquor to various parts of the country.

The detection was made when policemen in plainclothes posed as customers and went to the suspects and said they wanted to buy liquor for a wedding.

The suspects had been smuggling liquor and cigarettes into the country from various parts of the world over a considerable period of time.

The house had been taken on rent. The suspects are being further questioned in order to arrest their associates.

The raid was carried out by a team led by OIC B.P Abeyratne and directed by Organized Crimes Division director SSP T.Ganeshanadan. (Supun Dias)
