Spring; over here, as it tends to be most of the time, is just the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine all over again. For Sri Lankans though, it means that another night of baila fun, home-style food and unforgettable memories in true Sri Lankan style is just around the corner - at the legendary Sapphire Ball organised by the Imperial College London Sri Lankan Society.

Known early on simply as the ‘Imperial Ball’ and enjoyed for over a decade, Sapphire has grown from being a gathering of Sri Lankan students of a generation past to an all-out celebration of Sri Lankan culture and spirit at the largest scale. Today, Sapphire is proud to call itself the largest Sri Lankan event in the UK, attracting over a thousand students and non-students alike from all over the country and beyond.

True to its reputation for grandeur, this year’s ball will be held at the Troxy Grand Hall. Featuring the legendary group of musicians – the ‘Gypsies’ and Exceed followed by an After party with DJ Andy P from the world famous Ministry of Sound, Sapphire opens its doors once more on the 7th of March 2015.

Festivities aside, Sapphire has after all, always been a charity event. In the last few years, all proceeds from Sapphire were donated to ‘Medical Aid to Sri Lanka’, an organization that has performed over 1700 cataract operations and donated £25,000 towards a Mammography machine to facilitate early detection of breast cancer at the Cancer Hospital in Maharagama. Having been its largest donor last year with a total of £5000 raised, Sapphire strives to continue its tradition and raise the bar higher still this year.
All proceeds from Sapphire 2015 will be donated to ‘Medical Aid to Sri Lanka’ and ‘Save the Children UK’.
