A 6.8-magnitude earthquake has struck off Papua New Guinea.

The quake struck 96 miles (155 km) south of Rabaul on New Britain island.

There were no immediate reports of damages or casualties.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has said there is no danger of a tsunami on the island, which is northeast of mainland Papua.

It also said the epicentre was 27 miles (43km) deep.

Rabaul lies in the shadow of Mount Tavurvur, an active volcano.

During a severe eruption in 1994, Rabaul was destroyed.

Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea, which sits on the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean known as the Ring of Fire.
