For Sri Lankans living in the UK, to watch a Sri Lankan concert, they have to go to London. However, until recently, no one has stepped forward to organise a show outside of London – this may have something to do with the potential loss that a concert can have or it could have been due to the lack of resources in terms of organisation. Embracing every one of these risks and more, as an extension to ‘Gee Amaa’ which is occurs annually in London, we organised ‘Ridee Rekha’ for the very first time in Birmingham, Elgar Concert Hall. Hence, the concert marked a historical day when it took to the stage on the 20th of September 2015, with Dr Victor Rathnayake and Visharada Sunil Edirisinghe along with the renowned Music Director, Suresh Maliyadde.
Spectators living in the Midlands, the East and North West, some for the first time, came together in anticipation to witness a grand spectacle. The stage setting was simple, yet elegant. It possessed a similar resemblance to that of a conventional Sri Lankan stage and its striking radiance along with the concert hall’s atmosphere, brought everyone back home to Sri Lanka. With the arrival of Dr Victor Rathnayake on stage, the Sri Lankan audience had a unique experience, listening to his melodious voice, live, in close range.
Visharada Sunil Edirisinghe took his seat soon after. With his profound and elegant voice, the crowd was left amazed. Due to the show being exactly one hour behind schedule, all the artists took a collective decision to carry on without a break – this brought another fresh experience to the audience. Both of the artists took to the stage at this point, something that was never seen before. Seeing both maestros together on stage at once, singing side by side created a tremendous excitement from the crowd.
In organising ‘Ridee Rekha’, we attempted to highlight the orchestra’s each individual skills and talents – this was another unique factor that added to the overall experience of the show. Mahendra Pasquel (Lead Guitar), Priyantha Dassanayake (Flute), Nihal Kalubowila (Tabla), Rukshan Gunawardena (Violin), Ransith Mudduwa (Sitar), Ajula Gunasekara (Percussion), Tyrone Emarald (Drums), Prasad Orlando (Base Guitar), Nuwan Perera (Rhythm Guitar), Sanjeewa Gunasekara (Keyboard), effortlessly carried the audience to a harmonious Sri Lankan atmosphere. The audio surrounded the audience in a warm blanket, so much so that each and every one of the instruments played could be heard from all corners of the hall, all this credit goes to Manju Munasinghe as the sound engineer and Suresh Maliyadde as the music director. The responsibility of training and creating an overall team from four Sri Lankan professional players and six other UK players fell into to the shoulders of the contemporary music director, Suresh Maliyadde. The time and effort he committed to ‘Ridee Rekha’ was incomparable.
The show was organised by my family, hence, all the graphics, adverts, video, stage props, script, promotions, narrations was a family effort. This all came together, adding a tranquilizing essence to the evening. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to those who sincerely helped to make this event a success.
We hope we did justice to your expectations. And above all, we hope you enjoyed the monumental evening.

Sinhala -රස මනස් කුල්මත් කල 'රිදී රේඛා'
එක්සත් රාජධානියේ බහුවිධ පෙදෙස්හි වෙසෙන ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයන්ට, ලාංකීය ශිල්පීන්ගේ සංගීත ප්‍රසංගයක් නැරඹීමට නම් ලන්ඩනයට ම යායුතුය. එතෙක් මෙතෙක් ලන්ඩනයෙන් ඔබ්බෙහි ප්‍රසංගයක් සංවිධානය කිරීමට කිසිවෙක් ඉදිරිපත් නොවූයේ එයින් ඇතිවිය හැකි මූල්‍යමය පාඩුව නිසා ම පමණක් නොව, සංවිධානාත්මක වශයෙන් එවැන්නක් කිරීමට තිබූ අනේක විධ බාධාවන් නිසාය. මේ සියලු අවධානමක් ම බාර ගනිමින් ලන්ඩනයෙහි වාර්ෂිකව පැවැත්වෙන 'ගී අමා' (Gee Amaa) ප්‍රසංගයේ දිගුවක් ලෙස 'රිදී රේඛා' ප්‍රසංගය පළමු වරට සැප්තැම්බර් 20 වන ඉරිදා බර්මින්හැම් විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයීය 'එල්ගා(ර්)' ප්‍රසංග ශාලාවේදී (Elgar Concert Hall), ආචාර්ය වික්ටර් රත්නායකයන් සහ විශාරද සුනිල් එදිරිසිංහයන් සමග වේදිකා ගතවිය. එබැවින් ම එය ඓතිහාසික දිනයක් විය.
එක්සත් රාජධානියේ මිඩ්ලන්ඩ්ස් ප්‍රාන්තයේ සහ දුර බැහැර පෙදෙස් හි වෙසෙන සුභාවිත සංගීතයේ රස මිහිර විඳින්නෝ ශාලාව වෙත මුළු දුන්නේ ප්‍රසංගයේ ස්වභාවය පිළිබඳ කුතුහලයෙනි. තමන් පිවිසුනේ මව් බිමේ ප්‍රසංග වේදිකාවකට දැයි සිතෙන අන්දමේ වේදිකා නිර්මාණය අසිරිමත් විය. සරල විය. සමස්ථ ප්‍රේක්ෂකාගාරයම එකම සමාධියකට රැගෙන යන්නක් විය. වේදිකවට පළමුවෙන් සපැමිණි ආචාර්ය වික්ටර් රත්නායකයන් අසුන් ගැනීමත් සමග, ලාංකීය සුභාවිත සංගීතයේ පතාක යෝධයෙක්ගේ අති සමීපයේ සිට සිව් දශකයක් පුරා නිර්මාණය වුනු ගීත සජීවීව රස විඳීමට හැකි වීමෙන් අමන්දානන්දනයට පත්වූ ප්‍රේක්ෂකයාට අත්පොලසන් දීමට පවා අමතක වීම අපට නම් මතකයට ආවේ ගුත්තිලයේ එන 'නොදනිත් දරුවන් ඇකයෙන් වැටුනා...' පද පේළියයි.
විශාරද සුනිල් එදිරිසිංහයන් වේදිකාවට පිවිසුනේ ඉන් අනතුරුවය. ඉතා නිවුණු ස්වරයෙන් තම අත්දැකීම් මේ සීතල එංගලන්තයේ හුදකලාව වෙසෙන ලාංකීය සහෘදයන් හා උණුසුම්ව බෙදා හදා ගනිමින් හෙතමේ ද, තම ගී මුතු පෙළ එකින් එක මුදා හලේය.
හරියට ම පැයක ප්‍රමාදයෙන් ප්‍රසංගය ආරම්භ වූ බැවින් විවේක කාලයක් ලබා නොගෙන ම ප්‍රසංගය පැවැත්වීමට ශිල්පීන් තීරණය කිරීම, ප්‍රේක්ෂකයාට තවත් නවමු අත්දැකීමක් විය. ගලන ගඟක් සේ සුමිහිරි වූ ගීතාවලියකට සජීවීව සවන්දීම - නැරඹීම කවර නම් අපහසුවක් ද...! මහා ඝාන්ධර්වයින් දෙදෙනා එකිනෙකට නොදෙවෙනි අර්ථයෙන්ද රසයෙන්ද අනූන ගීත ගායනයට යොමුවුනේ මේ මොහොතේදීය. ලාංකීය ප්‍රසංග වේදිකාවකදී වත් දකින්නට නොලැබෙන ඒ අසිරිමත් දර්ශනයෙන් සමස්ථ ප්‍රෙක්ෂකාගාරය ම කුල්මත් වූ බවට නම් සැක නැත.
'රිදී රේඛා' ප්‍රසංගය වාද්‍ය වෘන්දයේ හැකියාවන් ද ඉස්මතු කර දක්වන ලෙස සැලසුම් කර තිබීම තවත් විශේෂත්වයක් විය. මහේන්ද්‍ර පැස්කුවෙල්ගේ ගිටාරයත්, ප්‍රියන්ත දසනායකගේ බටනලාවත්, නිහාල් කළුබෝවිලගේ තබ්ලාවත්, රුක්ෂාන් ගුණවර්ධනගේ වයලීනයත්, රන්සිත් මුද්දුවගේ සිතාරයත්, තම සදාදරණිය මව් බිම වෙත ප්‍රේක්ෂකයා රැගෙන ගියේ කිසිදු වෙහෙසකින් තොරවය. එතුලින් මතුවූ ස්වරයන් ප්‍රෙක්ෂකාගාරයේ සෑම තැනකට ම එකම අයුරින් ශ්‍රවනය වන ලෙස නාද සංයෝජනය කර තිබීම කෙතරම් අපූරුද...! එකිනෙකාට නොදෙවෙනි ලෙස සංගීත රසය ලබාදීමට අජුල ගුණසේකර, ටිරෝන් එමරල්ඩ්, ප්‍රසාද් ඕලැන්ඩෝ, නුවන් පෙරේරා, සංජීව ගුණසේකර සමත්වූ බව සටහන් නොකලහොත් එය එම දක්ෂ ශිල්පීන්ට කරන මහත් අසාධාරණයකි.
වෘත්තීය සංගීතවේදීන් සිව් දෙනෙක් (04) පමණක් රැගෙන මහා බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයට පැමිණ, එහි නොයෙක් වෘත්තීන්හි නියෙලිමින් දිවි ගෙවන තවත් සහෘදයන් සය (06) දෙනෙක් එක් කර ගනිමින් හා පුහුණු කරමින් මේ රසය බෙදාදීමට මූලික වූවෝ, නව පරපුරේ සංගීතවේදී සුරේෂ් මාලියද්දය. ඔහු ඒ සඳහා කල කැප කිරීම් 'රිදී රේඛා' ප්‍රසංගයේදී මොනවට නිම්නාද විය. ඊටම සරිලන ලෙස මංජු මුණසිංහ සංගීත සංයෝජනයෙන් දායක විය.
'රිදී රේඛා' ප්‍රසංගයේ අනෙක් සුවිශේෂ ම කරුණ වන්නේ එහි සියළු කටයුතු බර්මින්හැම්හි වෙසෙන ලේල්වල පවූලේ සාමූහික ප්‍රයත්නයක් වීමය. සාමාන්‍යයෙන් මෙවැනි ප්‍රසංග වලදී හමුවන 'සංවිධායක මණ්ඩලයක්' එහි නොවීය. වරුණ ලේල්වල සිය බිරිඳ හා දරු දෙදෙනා ද සමග මෙම ප්‍රසංගයේ සියළු කටයුතු ඉටු කරනන්ට යෙදින. ඒ අනුව සියළු ප්‍රචාරක ග්‍රැෆික් හා වීඩියෝ නිර්මාණ පමණක් නොව, ප්‍රවේශ පත්‍රයද නිර්මාණය කළෝ ඔවුන්මය. අළංකාර වේදිකා නිර්මාණය ද ඔවුන්ගේ නිවසේදීම නිර්මාණය විය. වේදිකා ආළෝක කරණ සැලසුම ද, ප්‍රසංගයේ පිටපත හා කථනය ද ඔවුන්ගේය. වැදගත් ම කරුණ වන්නේ මේ සියල්ලක් ම සුභාවිත රසාස්වාදනය තහවුරු කිරීම සඳහා එකසේ දායක වීමය.
මේ කාර්යය සාර්ථක කරගැනීමෙහිලා ස්වේච්ඡාවෙන් දායක වූ සියළුම දෙනාට ශ්‍රී ලාංකික සංගීත රසකාමීන්ගේ නොමද ප්‍රසංසාව හිමිවනු ඇත. මීලඟ 'රිදී රේඛාව' බර්මින්හැම්හි දිස්වන දිනය දක්වා රසකාමී ලාංකිකයන් බලා සිටින බව නම් නිසැකය.
