C.W.W. Kannagara Commemoration in London

C.W.W.Kannangara's service remembered

On the occasion of his 130th birth anniversary of late C.W.W.Kannangara,the United Kingdom branch of the Central Colleges Past Pupils’ Association of Sri Lanka, held a memorial service and a Sangika Dana Pinkama at the London Buddhist Vihara.

On June 4, 1944, as the Minister of Education he presented the Free Education Bill, in the State Council in Ceylon, resulting the dawn of free education for all in the island.

Many who have benefited from Minister Kannangara’s Central College concept attended the programme.

Head of the London Buddhist Vihara The Chief Sangha Nayaka of Great Britain, Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thera in his Anusaasana said that he was fortunate enough to meet the great son of Sri Lanka and described the value of Kannangara education thinking, the changes brought out to the education system of Sri Lanka by the concept of central colleges, the special value of the free education philosophy within the national education policy and the 1000 schools development program under the same concept.

Ven. Konwewe Ariyarathana Thera also paid tributes to the late Minister and said that "his policies were beneficial to many children from poorer families all around the island. Minister Kannangara’s vision was to provide equal opportunity to every child so that any one can lift him or herself from the most humble to the highest position in the social, economic or political life of the nation and education in a democratic society should be free foe every one at every stage".

President of the UK branch of the Central Colleges Past Pupils' Association R.A. Wimalasekera thanked the Nayaka Thera and the resident monks for their participation in the Pinkama and valued the Anusaasana given.

He also thanked every one who attended the Daha Pinkama and said that those who have received free education in Sri Lanka are greatly indebted to our motherland and has a duty to repay that debt.

 

කන්නන්ගර ගුණ ලන්ඩනයේදී සිහිකෙරේ

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ නිදහස් අධ්‍යාපනයේ පියා ලෙසින් සැලකෙන සී.ඩබ්ලියු. ඩබ්ලියු. කන්නන්ගර මැතිඳුන්ගේ ගුණ සමුදාය සිහිපත්කර එතුමන්හට පින් පැමිණවීමේ දානමය පින්කමක් පසුගියදින සමස්ත ලංකා මාධ්‍ය මහා විද්‍යාල ආදී ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමයේ මහා බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය ශාඛාව මඟින් ලන්ඩන් බෞද්ධ විහාරස්ථානයේදී සංවිධානය කරනු ලැබිය.

එවකට පැවති රාජ්‍ය මන්ත්‍රණ සභාවේ අධ්‍යාපන ඇමති වශයෙන් සිටියදී කන්නන්ගර මැතිඳුන් විවිධ විරෝධතාවයන්ට මුහුණ දෙමින් ඇති අප්රිතහත උත්සාහයක් දරා ක්‍රියාත්මක කල පුළුල් අධ්‍යාපන ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ මඟින් අතිවිශාල අර්ථලාභයක් ලැබුනේ ගම්බද පලාත්වල පිහිටවූ මාධ්‍ය මහා විධ්‍යාලවලින් අධ්‍යාපනය ලද සිදු සිසුවියන්ය.

දානමය පිංකම සඳහා ලන්ඩන් බෞද්ධ විහාරාධිපති මහා බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයේ ප්‍රධාන සංඝ නායක පුජ්‍ය බෝගොඩ සීලවිමල නාහිමියන් ප්‍රධාන විහාරවාසී මහා සංඝ රත්නය සහභාගී වුහ.

සීලවිමල නාහිමියන් සිය අනුසාශනාවේදී තමන්වහන්සේ කන්නන්ගර ඇමතිතුමන් මුණ ගැසීමට තරම් වාසනාව ලද්දෙකු බව සිහිපත් කරමින් එතුමන් අතින් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ අධ්‍යාපන ශේස්ත්‍රයට ඉටුවූ උදාර සේවය පිළිබඳව විස්තර කර දුන්නේය. මහාබ්‍රිතාන්‍යයේ ශාඛාවේ සභාපති ආර්.ඒ. විමලසේකර ලන්ඩන් ශාඛාව මඟින් ඉටුකිරීමට බලාපොරොත්තුවන වැඩකටයුතු පිලිබඳ විස්තරයක් ඉදිරිපත් කරනු ලැබිය.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ මාධ්‍ය මහාවිධ්යාල මඟින් අධ්‍යාපනය ලබා දැනට ලන්ඩන් නුවර පදිංචියට පැමිණ ඉන්නා බොහෝ දෙනෙකු එදින ලන්ඩන් ශාඛාවේ සාමාජිකත්වයද ලබාගනු ලැබිය.
