President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrives in New York

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who left for New York is scheduled to address the 69th United Nations General Assembly sessions today (23 Sep) for the seventh occasion. The President who left the island to participate in the United Nations General Assembly sessions has arrived in New York City last evening.

The President and the First Lady were presented with a flowered neck garland and bouquet of flowers upon arrival by a Sri Lankan child and the staff of the Sri Lankan Permanent Mission to the United Nations. President Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa were also welcomed by Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative at the UN Dr. Palitha Kohona, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States Prasad Kariyawasam and Sri Lanka’s Deputy Permanent Representative at the UN, Major General Shavendra Silva

The objective of the President's visit is to participate in the permanent session of the United Nations General Assembly. In addition the President is scheduled to deliver the national declaration on the United Nations Climate Summit 2014 today. Among the other international events the President is scheduled to take part, include the meeting on Clinton Global Initiative and a conference of Commonwealth Heads of Government.

 

Ministers Prof. G.L. Peiris, Nimal Siripala de Silva and Susil Premajayantha, Deputy Minister Nirupama Rajapaksa, Monitoring MP Sajin Vass Gunawardena, Parliamentarians J.R.P. Suriyapperuma, A.H.M. Azwer and Neranjan Wickremasinghe, Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga, Foreign Secretary Kshenuka Seneviratne and Secretary to the Ministry of Civil Aviation Dr. T.R.C. Ruberu are among those accompanying the President.

 

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States Mr. Prasad Kariyawasam, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative at the UN Dr. Palitha Kohona, Deputy Permanent Representative at the UN, Major General Shavendra Silva and other Sri Lankans are seen here welcoming President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa who arrived in New York City on 22 September will be attending the 69th United Nations General Assembly and the 2014 Climate Summit this week.
