The unborn child will become fourth in line to the throne, pushing Prince Harry further down the line of succession.
Kate, who was hospitalised during her first pregnancy with hyperemesis gravidarum, is once again suffering from acute morning sickness.
Clarence House confirmed that she is being treated by doctors at Kensington Palance and will miss a planned engagement with Prince William in Oxford today.
Prime minister David Cameron said he was ‘delighted’ by the happy news, saying: ‘Many congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. I’m delighted by the happy news that they’re expecting another baby.’
