Celebrating International Women’s Day & the Success of the Winter Classic

The Netball Association of Sri Lankan Schools UK (NASS UK) hosted a vibrant and memorable celebration on 8th March 2026 at the University of Hertfordshire, honouring International Women’s Day, the success of the Winter Classic Netball Tournament, and the official launch of the upcoming Summer Classic Netball Tournament 2026.

The event brought together a wide cross-section of the Sri Lankan community, including representatives from Old Girls’ and Old Boys’ Associations, sports enthusiasts, families, and distinguished guests—all united by a shared passion for netball and community development.

Cultural Performances

The evening was enriched with vibrant Sri Lankan cultural artistry. The Asela Rangadewa Dancing Academy delivered a captivating traditional dance performance. Ms. Yuhansi Fernando added a special musical element, celebrating Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage. These performances brought colour, rhythm, and a sense of home to the celebration.

NASS UK proudly unveiled plans for the Summer Classic Netball Tournament 2026, set to be one of the largest gatherings of Sri Lankan school communities and alumni in the UK.

Promoting Men’s Netball

A landmark announcement of the evening was NASS UK’s initiative to introduce and promote men’s netball within Sri Lankan school communities.

The presence of Ky Lewis, a Men’s Netball World Cup player, inspired many young athletes, particularly from Sri Lankan Boys’ School Associations. NASS UK expressed strong enthusiasm for encouraging Old Boys’ Associations to form men’s teams, marking a progressive step in expanding inclusivity and opportunity within the sport.

The programme was conducted with professionalism and warmth, guiding the audience through an evening that celebrated achievement, community spirit, and the continued growth of netball within the Sri Lankan school network in the UK.

A warm welcome opened the ceremony, followed by a well-coordinated programme that maintained an engaging flow throughout the evening. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing deep appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of the Winter Classic Netball Tournament.

15 Sri Lankan schools participated in the very first NASS UK Winter Classic Tournament, marking a proud moment in the organisation’s journey.
