Sri Lanka High Commission in London commemorates 68th Independence Day
The Sri Lanka High Commission in London commemorated the 68th Independence Day of Sri Lanka on 4th February with the hoisting of the national flag and recital of the national anthem followed by a two-minute silence to remember all those who sacrificed their lives in the defence of the country. Religious observances were conducted by the Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thero, Sivasri Supramaniyak Kurukkal, Rev. Fr. Daya Perera, and Moulavi Mohamed Anas, respectively. The event was attended by a wide cross-section of members of the Sri Lankan community in the UK.

Acting High Commissioner, Sugeeshwara Gunaratna while reading out excerpts from the independence day messages of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that the Government was engaged in the twin tasks of building a lasting peace between our communities through ongoing reconciliation efforts while at the same time engaging in a concerted development drive aimed at restructuring the economy, attracting investment and boosting exports. The end vision of both the reconciliation and development drives was the creation of a prosperous, modern democracy based on good governance, rule of law and a truly meaningful parliamentary system. He requested the Sri Lankan community members in the UK to extend their hands to the efforts of the government to consolidate on the hard won peace and freedom achieved and in taking the country forward.

On 5th February, the Acting High Commissioner hosted a reception for the members of the diplomatic corps, Lords and Members of the House of Commons, representatives of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, representatives of international organizations in London, Mayors and Councillors, academics and the business community with interests in Sri Lanka.

Acting High Commissioner Sugeeshwara Gunaratna during his welcoming address highlighted the enhanced bilateral relations between UK and Sri Lanka and briefed the invitees about the developments in Sri Lanka including Sri Lanka's achievements during the last 68 years, especially in the area of human development. While encouraging those present to strengthen linkages with Sri Lanka, he noted that in many ways it was an exciting time to be in Sri Lanka and a number of travellers' magazines have rated Sri Lanka quite highly. He highlighted the fact that the Association of British Travel Agents has included Sri Lanka as one of the 12 destinations expected to capture consumers' imagination in 2016. UK's Harper's Bazaar Magazine has put Sri Lanka at No. 3 in tourism hot spots around the world, Condé Nast Travellers Magazine has put Sri Lanka at No. 2 while Lonely Planet has put Sri Lanka among the Dream Trips for 2016. He ended his short address with a toast to the good health of Her Majesty The Queen while Her Majesty's Marshall Alistair Harrison raised a toast to the good health of His Excellency The President of Sri Lanka.

The guests were entertained to a variety of Sri Lankan cuisine, Kandyan dance and oriental music.

ලන්ඩන් නුවර ශ්‍රී ලංකා මහකොමසාරිස් කාර්යාලය මඟින් 68 වන නිදහස් දිනය සැමරීම වෙනුවෙන් උත්සව දෙකක් සංවිධානය කර තිබුණි. ඉන් පළමුවැන්න පැවැත්වුනේ පෙබරවාරි 4 වෙනිදින උදෑසන මහකොමසාරිස් කාර්යාලයේදීය.

මඟුල් බෙර වාදනයකරන අතරතුර වැඩබලන මහකොමසාරිස් සුගීශ්වර ගුණරත්න විසින් ශ්‍රී ලංකා ජාතික ධජය මහකොමසාරිස් කාර්යාලයීය කොඩිගසෙහි එසවීමෙන් උත්සවයේ වැඩකටයුතු ආරම්භ කෙරුණි. ඉන් අනතුරුව පැමිණ සිටි සියලුම දෙනා එකතුව ජාතික ගීය සිංහල භාෂාවෙන් ගායනා කළ අතර ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ස්වයිරීභාවය සුරැකීම උදෙසා ජීවිත පරිත්‍යාගකළ සියලුමදෙනා සිහිකර විනාඩි දෙකක නිශ්ශබ්දතාවයක් ද පවත්වනු ලැබිය.

ලන්ඩන් බෞද්ධ විහාරාධිපති මහා බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයේ ප්‍රධාන සංඝ නායක පුජ්‍ය බෝගොඩ සීලවිමල නාහිමියන් පැමිණසිටි බෞද්ධ සැදැහැවතුන් තිසරණ සහිත පංච ශීලයෙහි පිහිටුවා සෙත් පැතීය. අනතුරුව වසර හාරසියයකට සමීප කාලයකතුල විදේශ පාලනයට යටත්ව තිබු අප මව්බිම නිදහස ලබාගැනීමේ වැදගත්කම පහදා දෙමින් උන්වහන්සේ අනුශාසනාවක්ද පැවැත්වුහ.

සිවාශ්‍රී සුප්‍රමනියම් කුරුක්කල් තුමා විසින් හින්දු ආගමික පුජාව පැවැත්වුවේය. දයා පෙරේරා පියනම විසින් කතෝලික ආගමික මෙභෙයද මව්ලවි මොහමඩ් අනාස් විසින් ඉස්ලාමිය ආගමික මෙභෙයද පැවැත්වුහ. බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයේ පදිංචි සියලුම ශ්‍රී ලාංකික ජන කොට්ඨාශ නියෝජනය කෙරුණ විශාල පිරිසක් උත්සවය සඳහා සහභාගී වුහ.

වැඩබලන මහකොමසාරිස් සුගීශ්වර ගුණරත්න පැමිණ සිටි සියලුම දෙනා පිළිගනිමින් ශ්‍රී ලංකා ජනාධිපති වරයාගේ සහ අගමැති තුමන්ගේ නිදහස් දින පණිවිඩ උපුටා දක්වමින් කෙටි කතාවක් කළේය. එහිදී දැනට ක්‍රියාත්මක සමඟිසන්ධාන ක්‍රියාදාමයන් තුලින් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සියලුම ජන කොට්ටාශයන් අතර සහජීවනය වර්ධනය කිරීම පිළිබඳවත් රටතුල ස්ථිරසාර සාමයක් ඇතිකරලීම සඳහා රජය දියත්කර ඇති වැඩසටහන් පිළිබඳවත් රටතුල ආරම්භවී ඇති සංවර්ධන වැඩසටහන් පිළිබඳවත් කරුණු විස්තර කර දෙනු ලැබීය.
පෙබරවාරි 5 වනදින සවස මහකොමසාරිස් නිළ නිවසේදී ලන්ඩන් නුවර ඉන්නා මහකොමසාරිස්වරුන්, තානාපති වරුන් ඇතුළු විදේශ රාජ්‍ය දුතවරුන්, බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රී වරුන්, බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය විදේශ හා පොදුරාජ්‍ය මණ්ඩල කාර්යාල නිලධාරින්, නගරාධිපති වරුන්, නඟර සභිකයින්, ජාත්‍යන්තර සංවිධාන නියෝජිතයින් සහ ශ්‍රී ලංකාව සමඟ සම්බන්ධතා පවත්වන ප්‍රමුඛ පෙලේ ව්‍යාපාරිකන් වෙනුවෙන් ප්‍රිය සම්භාෂණයක් පැවැත්විණි. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවත් බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයත් අතර ඇති ද්විපාක්ෂික සම්බන්ධතාවයේ අගය පෙන්වාදෙමින් වැඩබලන මහකොමසාරිස් වරයා කෙටි කතාවක් කළේය.

එහිදී ඔහු ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ වර්තමාන සංවර්ධන වැඩකටයුතු, සංචාරක අංශයේ ප්‍රවර්ධනය මෙන්ම සංචාරකයින් අතර ශ්‍රී ලංකාව දැනට ලබා ඇති අසාමාන්‍ය ජනප්රියත්වය පිළිබඳවත් කරුණු පැහැදිලි කළේය. ලෝකයේ සංචාරය කලයුතු හොඳම රටවල් 12 අතර ශ්‍රී ලංකාව ඉහලම ස්ථානයක් දිනා ඇතිබව පෙන්වා දුන් ඔහු ලෝකයේ ප්‍රමුක සංචාරක සමාගම්, සඟරා සහ සංචාරක ලේකඛයින් ශ්‍රී ලංකාව පිළිබඳව දක්වා ඇත්තේ ඉස්තරම් නිර්දේශයන් බව පෙන්වා දුන්නේය. බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය මහ රැජින නියෝජනය කරමින් පැමිණ සිටි අලිස්ටේයර් හැරිසන් මාර්ෂල් වරයා ශ්‍රී ලංකා ජනාධිපති වරයාටත් ජනතාවටත් සුභ පතමින් බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය සම්ප්‍රදායානුකුලව සව්දිය පිරුවේය.

පැමිණසිටි සියලුදෙනාහහටම ප්‍රනීත ශ්‍රී ලාංකික ආහාර පාන වලින් සංග්‍රහ කරන ලද අතර උඩරට නැටුම් සහ සිංහල සංගීත අංගයන්ද ඉදිරිපත් කරනු ලැබිය.
