A Life of Grace, Strength, and Inspiration: Remembering Anu Fernando
A heartfelt tribute was held in loving memory of Anu Fernando, celebrating a remarkable life that, though spanning just 39 years, was filled with extraordinary achievements, deep compassion, and unwavering dedication to family, friends, and community.
The memorial Pooja, organised by the Past Pupils’ Association of St. Paul’s Milagiriya - UK Branch, took place at the London Buddhist Vihara on Thursday, 3rd April 2026 at 7pm.
Despite the short notice and the demands of a working weekday, around 120 members of the community gathered immediately after work, a testament to the profound impact Anu had on those around her.
The evening was marked by an atmosphere of unity, warmth, and shared remembrance. Friends and families came together to honour Anu’s life - one defined by kindness, strength, and an enduring spirit.
Emotions ran deep as stories were shared, tears were shed, and cherished memories were revisited. The presence and support of the Paulian community in the UK made the occasion especially meaningful.
A particularly moving moment came as the head monk delivered a serene and insightful bana, gently reminding those present of the impermanence of life and offering comfort through wisdom and reflection.
Anu’s journey was one of excellence from a young age. During her school years at St. Paul’s Milagiriya Girls’ School, she distinguished herself as an outstanding sportswoman, earning numerous accolades in basketball and athletics. Her passion for sports continued in the UK, where she became a key member of the SPM netball team, served as vice-captain of the rugby team, and achieved recognition as an award-winning cricketer.
Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Anu was deeply committed to education. As a sixth form teacher in the UK, she inspired countless students, teaching Geography, Business Studies, French, and more. Her dedication to learning was evident in her own academic journey as well, having successfully completed her postgraduate studies in 2024 with outstanding results.
Above all, Anu will be remembered for her love and devotion as a wife and mother. She leaves behind her husband, KC Fernando, and her beloved family, who were at the centre of her world.
Anu Fernando’s life, though brief, was rich in purpose, achievement, and love. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the community she strengthened, and the memories that will forever be cherished.
Goodbye, Anu..once more, and forever!
