Help to raise fund for Pasandi’s Bone Marrow Transplant

Twelve year old Miss. Pasandi Kariyawasam was diagnosed with Thalassaemia Major when she was six months old. Thalassaemia Major is a genetic defect blood disorder that restricts the full development of haemoglobin in the red blood cells. The consequence of this defect is a restriction of normal oxygen flow around the body. The common symptoms associated with Thalassaemia involve chronic fatigue, poor growth and fragile bones. Prash says that Pasandi has had regular blood transfusions since her diagnosis along with iron tablet treatments. Doctors say that these treatments are only viable until she reaches her mid-teens. The only possible cure for Thalassaemia is through a Bone Marrow Transplant.

12 years, Pasandi’s parents, Ganga and Senarath have tried to find a suitable donor from close and distant relatives with no luck in their favour. In November 2016, Pasandi’s parents received a phone call from the Nawaloka in Colombo informing them that there was a matching donor in the registry for Pasandi. This was good news, but in order to secure the donor they had to act fast.

On the 29th November 2016, the parents received a letter from the hospital stating the fees for the Bone Marrow Transplant, of 5,800,000.00 LKR (approx. £32,000). Unfortunately this sum was too high to be raised in a short space of time for Pasandi’s family. Therefore her relatives are pleading for help from anyone willing to make a donation towards Pasandi’s Bone Marrow Transplant.

A previous US crowdfunding page for Pasandi, advertised by GoFundMe, started the campaign. They managed to raise almost $9,000. However, after a month of display the site expired its time of view. A new UK campaign was started up by Prash with a target of £10,000 until Tuesday 10th January 2017.
