Celebrating a Historic Milestone: 150 Years of Richmond College & 40 Years of RCU UK

10 May, 2026
The Richmond College community came together in a spirit of gratitude, remembrance, and unity as we marked two remarkable milestones, the 150th Anniversary of Richmond College and the 40th Anniversary of Richmond College Union UK.

From humble beginnings in 1876 to becoming one of Sri Lanka’s most respected educational institutions, Richmond College continues to stand tall as a beacon of learning, leadership, discipline, and tradition. For generations, Mother Richmond has shaped countless lives, producing individuals who continue to make meaningful contributions across the world.

As part of the commemorative celebrations, an Alms Giving Ceremony was held at London Buddhist Vihara on Sunday, 10th May, bringing together old boys, families, friends, and distinguished guests from across the Richmond community.

The ceremony was conducted in loving memory of past RCU UK members and Richmond College staff whose dedication, service, and commitment helped shape Richmond College into the institution it is today. The event reflected the values deeply rooted in the Richmond spirit , gratitude, unity, respect, and service.

A special highlight of the day was the presence of representatives from fellow schools in Galle, including Mahinda College, St. Aloysius' College, and Southlands College, whose attendance symbolised the strong friendships and mutual respect shared among the leading schools of the region.

The gathering was further enriched by inspiring speeches delivered by the President of RCU UK, who reflected on the union’s proud 40-year journey and its continued commitment to strengthening the Richmond community in the United Kingdom and beyond. Attendees were also privileged to hear heartfelt reflections from the Vice Patron of OBA UK, Dr. Sena Nanayakkara, whose words brought back cherished memories from the early days of the organisation and highlighted the dedication of those who helped shape its strong foundation.

The atmosphere throughout the day was one of warmth, reflection, and pride, as generations of Richmondites gathered to honour the past while celebrating the enduring legacy of the college and its global community.

As Richmond College moves forward into a new chapter, these celebrations serve as a reminder that the values, traditions, and lifelong friendships built through the college continue to inspire generations across the world.

Here’s to 150 glorious years of Mother Richmond and many more years of unity, excellence, and Richmond pride ahead. β€οΈπŸ’™
